1. Describe what Burlesque is, for someone who’s never seen a Burlesque show?
At a burlesque show, you should see a mix of many different things. From comedy to tease, drama, theatre, dance, cabaret, circus….there is no limit when it comes to burlesque! But expect entertainement of the striptease kind!
2. What inspired you to become a Burlesque Dancer?
I have always been a dancer. There have been times when I’ve come away from it but have always come back to it, and my inspirations are from four main women from different pars of the world. My father is Egyptian and I have many childhood memories of watching the old Egyptian movies of the 40s and 50s and seeing beautiful dancers perform in cabaret scenes. Samia Gamal is a huge model of inspiration for my cts and the way I dance. I studied languages at university and watched a lot of Cuban and Mexican cinema, so performers such as Tongolele, Amalia Aguilar and Ninon Sevilla play a big part in my imagination when it comes to choreographing routines and deciding on the kind of costumes I want to use. I have an act called “Amor Voodoo”, which is based on a dance scene where Ninon Sevilla is dancing on some drums – the drums are my favorite instrument, and this is such a powerful routine!
3. How long have you been doing it for? and What’s the thing that gave you the courage to do it?
4. How has your performance improved or changed since you first started?
5. Where have you performed? (venues, cities, countries) Any Favorite or least favorite Venues?
I have performed all around the UK, Europe and now I have the pleasure performing in the city of Angels! I have been looking forward to this trip for a long time, and I really feel that I will return to London with a greater understanding of the variety of performance. My favorite place to perform iat is the Connie Douglas Club in Milan. The Italian crowd are so responsive and I feel really at home there. But now I’m in LA, Milan has competition! The LA crowd are so responsive, it gives me a great thrill to perform in front of such an interactive crowd!
6. Have you overcome any obstacles, any interesting stories about expressing yourself with this art form?
I get a total sense of freedom of expression every time I perform. It sounds silly, but I don’t feel trapped in a human body, I feel freer than that! If you imagine a jazz club, set in the 30s, beautiful women and handsome men, and the flow of the smoke from the cigars that plays with the crowd and teases them, that’s the feeling I get from performing. It would be dark and maybe moody, but ever so enjoyable!
7. Describe what one of your performances is like, to someone who hasn’t seen you perform yet.
I like to portray powerful characters – from a Voodoo priestess, to an Egytptian queen, women who have strength and stature. Costumes are very important for me, so I always have an element of surprise when I revel different layers of my costumes. I have Adora Belle embellish all of my costumes and she’s made my headpieces and my rope costume too. The music has to be really good….I love rhythm n blues, and I dance every month with a Jake Vegas and The Monkey’s Uncle in London, and if the music is good, really good, I know I will perform well.
8. How do you feel about this new Burlesque Revival, is it growing or is it dying?
9. Besides Burlesque, what are some of your other interests.
Music!! I’m nothing without it and it helps me whatever mood I’m in. Old scholl Rhythm n Blues, rock n roll, latin rhythms, luckily I get to enjoy this aspect of performing dancing with live bands in the UK.
I love to learn different languages. I speak French and Spanish which I guess is nothing speacial as many people speak two or more languages, but I really love having the ability to communicate with people when I travel. So next on my list is to learn Italian, though I do pick things up every time I go there to perform. I also love sewing, and I make most of my own dresses, and being tall and long legged, I love the feeling of wearing something that fits me perfectly (just don’t look on the inside where you might see some hidden mistakes!).
10. What’s coming up for you? Any big events or plans for you?
I’ll be performing at the International Jeysetter’s Ball in Lonodn for the London Burlesque Week, then I will heading to Helsinki for a show with Chaz Royal, and then back to Milan for the Connie Douglas Club! This year I’m also placing a big focus on developing my aerial skills and hopefully you’ll see me perform aerial routines within the near future!
